Back again...

It has been a while since Polly "the Possum" had been around. We had always suspected that with her fat belly that she would be due with a new arrival soon. Sure enough 1am in the morning Jo was awoken by a large nosie to our back deck. It was Polly and her new addition "Pippi" as Jo has named her little girl after the Swedish childrens character Pipi Longstockings."

Pippi unsure of the strange good looking Gentleman and plain old Jo...lol just joking JO.

Quiet weekend

We've been pretty busy lately and have been away a lot, so this past weekend we turned down an invitation to go to Newcastle and stayed around the bay relaxing.  We went down to the beach in Nelson Bay Friday afternoon with the cribbage board, fishing rods, some bubbly and home made crepes. It's easy to forget what a paradise we live in when everyday life takes over.  You have to remind yourselves sometimes to stop for a while and enjoy what you've got.

I got a 24 hand in cribbage and kicked Wyatt's a**!

Beautiful sunset that came with a dolphin swimming by really close, hard to catch on camera unfortunately

Poop proofing

We love having our beautiful birds around. They provide so much entertainment and some of them are pretty tame. BUT they are extremely messy and poop everywhere. I don't know how many times a week we have to mop the balcony, so we decided to poop proof their little corner where they feed and where most of their pooping occur. I spent the morning scrubbing the floor and cutting and taping garbage bags to the floor to protect is from their mess. The birds don't seem too bother by the change in colour and material to the floor. First one in to feed was our baby lorikeet Patrick (although he's probably an adolescent by now) and Krusty the Cockatoo. Krusty is a bit shy so he flew off when I tried to take a picture of him. I caught him in a nearby tree though waiting for his turn where he's still patiently biding his time.

Road trip

We had a lovely relaxing weekend in Coffs Harbour and Port Maquire on the north coast of NSW last weekend with Quintin, Sal and little Harry.  We stopped in small little places along the way and got to see places we never would have if we ventured out ourselves.  Apart from baby Harry getting a bit impatient travelling in the car, it all went relly smoothly:)

Crawling creatures

We experienced a bit of a heat wave last week with 36C. Unfortunately the heat comes with horrible little creatures that find their way in to our house through tiny little gaps. I still find it hard to stumble upon dead cockroaches but at least they're harmless. A huntsman spider on the other hand can give you a nasty bite. This huge one was hanging around in our living room hiding behind the beams on the ceiling. We have now sprayed the house, inside and outside with bug spray. Summer is nearly here:)

Koala Rescue

Wyatt and I are members of the Hunter Koala Preservation Society that care for and rehabilitate injured koalas.  Sue, who is the president of HKPS, sent us an email recently asking if we wanted to meet a little baby koala that is currently in her care.  So, a couple of days ago we went to see little Buster.  Buster was found clinging on to his mum, who had been hit by a car, on the side of the road.  The mum was dead but little Buster kept calling out to her.  A terribly sad story, but at least he now has the chance to grow up, be healthy and eventually be released back out into the wild when he's big enough.

Buster is possibly the cutest little thing I've ever seen.  Whilst full grown koalas can bite and be a bit unpredictable, they're wild after all, you could go all out cuddling this little fur ball:).  The only thing to be aware of was his sharp claws, that's why he has a little sheepskin pillow that he hangs on to.  Sue has big branches on her veranda where koalas can practise their climbing, and it was so funny watching little Buster.  He was like a puppy, sitting still and then all of a sudden getting a spur of energy bouncing up the branch.  We could have stayed all night and have already decided on another visit soon.  We'll do training soon to become rescuers so if someone finds an injured koala or one that needs to be relocated, Wyatt and I will be able to help out!

Gold Coast and Hat Head

We had a real nice weekend in the Gold Coast and going camping.  Two days in Surfers Paradise (part of the Gold Coast) was enough however.  It's pretty commercial and there's lots of nightclubs and party people in their late teen, early twenties and we're a bit too old for that:)

We did some shopping though, and enjoyed the beautiful beach in the middle of the city.  The two highlights of the trip were me winning 80 dollars in the casino and finding a newly opened Danish Delicatessen that served really nice smørrebrød! They are like an open sandwich made of dark rye bread with different toppings like pickled herring, salmon, roast beef etc.  They were delicious and the Danish girls working in the shop were really sweet.  Made me feel a bit homesick...

The beach in Surfers Paradise

We headed down to Hat Head by car on the Sunday to meet up with Lauren, Jarvis and a few others.  We saw quite a bit of wildlife including Possums, a Huntsman spider and a Kangaroo.  I was brushing my teeth in the morning when I saw something in the corner of my eye.  I thought it was a person running but when it stopped I turned around to see a Kangaroo almost as tall as me staring back at me five or ten meters away.  Whilst I ran around alerting the others and trying to start my dead phone for a pictures, a gang of kids came running and starting chasing it so it ran off:(
